History
When it was founded in 1921-1922, Bravura Nova Scotia was called the Halifax Conservatory of Music Alumni Society. Its purpose was to support the Conservatory (now the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts), its students, and its teachers.
At the time, the Conservatory had already been in existence for more than three decades, having opened in September 1887, the same month as the Toronto—now Royal—Conservatory, making them the oldest institutions of their type in Canada. Over the ensuing years, the names of both Halifax organizations have changed, as has the range and scope of their activities.
Bravura’s Archivist Dr. Garland (Gary) Brooks has created chronological histories of Bravura Nova Scotia and of MCPA, highlighting the major events in their evolution to become the institutions they now are.
